A warm breeze on Thursday, August 12, welcomed a throng of revelers to Norwalk Sailing School (NSS) at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk, CT for the ribbon cutting ceremony and the introduction of the school’s new director Nodira I and administrative staff.
Mayor Harry Rilling and First Lady Lucia along with several other local representatives and dignitaries greeted the assembly of staff, campers, parents and friends of NSS.
Ms. I was selected to take over the operations based on her enthusiasm, background, and progressive plan to bring sailing and the full maritime experience to all residents of the “Sound of Connecticut” City and surrounding towns and villages.
Founded in the early 1960s to provide safe and fun sailing instruction, NSS offers community programs including a sailing summer camp for ages 8-16, kayak and paddleboard rentals and guided tours, windsurfing lessons and rentals, private sailing lessons, and more.
A recent designation as a 501-C3 not-for-profit enterprise will allow tax deductible donations for scholarships and improvements to the facility, fleet of sailboats and windsurfers, kayaks and paddleboards, staff development, and future programming.
NSS joins a growing number of institutions such as the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, Mystic Seaport Museum, Oakcliff Sailing in Oyster Bay, NY, Rocking The Boat in the Bronx, NY, and Sail Newport and the IYRS School of Technology & Trades in Newport, RI as centers for the development and appreciation of maritime adventure, sport and trades.
