Our friends at Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean are looking for a Captain and First Mate for their flagship research vessel American Promise.

Happy New Year! We hope everyone is having a fantastic start to 2023.

As we spend the winter months preparing and planning, our expedition season begins to take shape with an exiciting schedule on the horizon that continues our work impacting the problem of marine debris. This year we are excited for new collaborations and reconnecting with partners that will expand our educational programs, outreach and remote island cleanups. We continue to analyze our Hudson River microplastics data and look forward to sharing those findings with you soon. All these approaches help bring us closer to solutions for sustainable communities that promote healthy oceans. 

We launch in May to begin our expedition season, and are currently seeking a Captain and First Mate to work with our team and American Promise this summer. Read on to find out more about these positions and please share far and wide with anyone who is a good fit!

Call for Captain

As a Captain aboard American Promise, you play a key role in the success of our expedition season! We are seeking an enthusiastic ambitious sailor who thrives in team environments. The position is for 4 months of full-time work (May through end of August), involving approximately 10 weeks of programming in coastal waters. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, sailing as master of Rozalia Project’s Research Vessel, American Promise with all ancillary duties. Including but not limited to boat repair and maintenance, sailing, trip planning, navigation, daily safety checks of vessel, maintaining fuel and ship logs, sail training with onboard volunteers, tender operations and assisting program leaders with other mission related activities. There is opportunity to participate in cleanups, education and other mission related activities.

The first mate works alongside our Captain and crew, creating a strong team to help us sail through our expedition season!  As a first mate aboard American Promise, responsibilities include but are not limited to, sailing and food captain of Rozalia Project’s Research Vessel, American Promise with all ancillary duties. Including but not limited to boat repair and maintenance, sailing, trip planning, navigation, daily safety checks of vessel, maintaining fuel and ship logs, sail training with onboard volunteers, tender operations, food provisioning, and meal planning and preparation for crew, and assisting program leaders with other mission-related activities. You will also have the opportunity to participate in cleanups, education and other program activities!
