Presented by America’s Boating Club of Greenwich, this course starts with basic boat designs, rigging & sail types, then explains the forces that make a sailboat sail and the physics of sailing. Other chapters cover in-depth techniques including rig tuning, sailing upwind & downwind, helmsmanship, spinnaker handling, heavy seas sailing & storms, docking, anchoring, mooring, knots & navigation. An optional section on racing is available.

The National Lighthouse Museum and America’s Boating Club (U.S. Power Squadron, established 1914, Staten Island Club) have teamed up to offer a seminar in weather forecasting. Topics covered include Air Masses and Fronts; Highs, Lows and Winds; Mid-latitude Storms; Tropical Storms and Hurricanes; Clouds; Thunderstorms; Fog; Beaufort Scale; Forecasting; Forecasting Tips; and Internet Weather Resources. Tickets are $15 for National Lighthouse Museum members and $25 for guests. A certificate of participation will be presented at the conclusion of the seminar.

Women’s Sailing Conference

This one-day, on-land event is an exciting opportunity for women to learn the art and science of sailing from experienced women mariners. Participants can choose four options from an array of a dozen hands-on and classroom workshops including sailing theory, navigation, outboard motor repair, sail care and more. An optional welcome dinner with a keynote presenter is available on Friday, 3/29, as well as a post-conference networking dinner on Saturday, 3/30. The conference fee includes a light breakfast, hearty lunch, and all workshops for beginner, intermediate & advanced sailors.
