Our friends at Sailors for the Sea Powered by Oceana, the world’s only ocean conservation organization that engages, educates and activates the sailing and boating community toward restoring ocean health, are building a network of engaged conservationists through their Green Boating Initiative.

As sailors and boaters, we see firsthand the devastating threats that our oceans face such as plastic pollution, oil spills, overfishing and marine habitat destruction. This Newport, Rhode Island-based organization’s Green Boating Initiative mobilizes the sailing and boating community to take action to address these ocean health issues and protect marine environments worldwide.

Green Boaters are provided with the latest information and resources on sustainable boating practices and opportunities to act on critical policy issues that are needed to combat marine plastic pollution, prevent habitat destruction, source responsible seafood and limit overfishing.

“Being intimately connected to the ocean, boaters are ideally positioned to be advocates and leaders for protecting our seas,” said Shelley Brown, Education Director at Sailors for the Sea Powered by Oceana. “Through Green Boating Initiative, Sailors for the Sea is building a community of engaged activists and providing these boaters with tangible opportunities to protect our waterways.”

With over 12 million registered boats in just the United States alone, this community of Green Boaters has far reaching potential across the globe. Now is the time to be a part of this leading community of Green Boaters who are restoring the health of our waterways. When boaters all stand together and make their voices heard, they can make a difference for marine life and help save our oceans.

Sailors for the Sea was founded in 2004 by David Rockefeller, Jr. and Dr. David Treadway, two avid sailors who recognized the importance of educating and activating this constituency of ocean enthusiasts. In 2018, Sailors for the Sea joined forces with Oceana, the largest international advocacy organization dedicated solely to ocean conservation. By combining Sailors for the Sea’s goal of educating boaters about marine conservation with Oceana’s experience mobilizing supporters to advocate for policy that supports healthy and abundant oceans, the Green Boating Initiative creates a global network of active, engaged ocean champions within the sailing and boating community who are taking action to save our oceans.
