For Rhode Islanders, boating season is over — unless you’re a frostbiter who braves the cold to get your racing fix. But for a few days this January, New England boaters can indulge in their passion for being on the water by heading to the Providence Boat Show. The 20th running of the show will be held January 18-20 at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, RI.
Getting dressed for frostbiting can be tricky. Especially in the early season when the air can still be warm but the water cools off. As the big chill sets in here are a few gear choices that keep me warm and toasty while on the water.
French boat builder Dufour Yachts introduced their new Dufour 36 Performance yacht at the Paris Boat Show in December. Last month, the Northeast Dufour dealer, Northstar Yacht Sales, invited us to the D36 P’s North American debut in Portsmouth, RI.
The stunning new Hunter 33 is Cruising World’s 2012 Best Compact Cruiser 30-35 feet. Hunter’s signature window line gives this yacht the sleek feel of the latest Hunters, and the flush-mount deck hatches complement the new profile. The hull has a wider beam further aft and more profound bow hollow, resulting in a longer dynamic waterline for more speed. A fold-down swim platform extends the cockpit at the dock or at anchor.
On board the Oceanis 45, harmony reigns supreme: everything in its place on this beautiful yacht, which can aspire to meet a varied profile of life aboard. This can be recognized in a great number of intelligent details, including a chart table that is also a living room table, a continuous bilge that increases overall comfort, and an open bathing platform that makes access to the sea easier. With several layouts, this is a yacht that adapts to all requirements. The new Oceanis 45 is available at Cape Yachts, an authorized Beneteau dealer with locations in South Dartmouth, MA, Essex, CT and Mamaroneck, NY. For more information, visit cape-yachts.com.

The spring sailing season is right around the corner, so it’s time to go up to the attic and see what we have in the ol’ sailing bag. Many people have been looking at all of those giant snow piles as timetables. As they got smaller, the sailing season got closer. That melting snow is half the reason sailors must dress appropriately during the first season of the year. Water has a high thermal inertia, which means it will retain its temperature for a lengthy period of time. Here in the Northeast, the water will not start to feel warm until late June. Fortunately, with the advances in clothing fabric technology, sailing apparel companies have been able to develop gear for sailors to comfortably go out in practically any weather conditions.Read more
