MudRatz, a US Sailing Certified Member Organization created to give keen Optimist sailors in eastern Connecticut an opportunity to become better racers by extending their sailing season, will be sailing out of New England Science & Sailing in Stonington CT this spring, on Sunday evenings from May 11 through June 22.
“The MudRatz goal is to complement the sailing programs offered by the yacht clubs of the region by enabling enthusiastic sailors to practice in the spring and fall as well as travel as a team to regattas around the country,” said Brandon Flack, a member of the MudRatz board of directors. “Last fall the team grew to over 50 sailors, with 30-plus Optis and six 420s practicing through the end of October. By sailing Sunday evenings (so as not to conflict with other spring sports) and keeping the full season’s cost around $150, the program has grown tremendously and become a great value in just three seasons of sailing.”
“The MudRatz will again host a series of clinics for 420 and Opti sailors who want to develop and improve their sailing and racing skills,” Flack continued. “These clinics will provide a positive and fun environment where sailors will learn advanced techniques and strategies. The team – which would not be possible without the support of the ECSA and the Mystic River Mudheads – also has plans to host a Kids Only Rules Clinic with Dave Perry on Thursday night, May 8.”
