Reinier Eenkema van Dijk of Mamaroneck, NY and Spencer McDonough of Greenwich, CT are among the 12 sailors named to US SAILING’s 2011 Youth World Team.
Eight of these athletes were selected based on firstplace finishes in their respective classes at the 2011 US SAILING ISAF Youth World Qualifier at Houston Yacht Club in La Porte, TX, while the windsurfer and multihull team members were chosen by resumé and did not compete at that event. As the winners of the Boy’s International 420 class in Texas, Eenkema van Dijk (helm) and McDonough will receive invitations to represent the U.S. at the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Youth World Championship in Zadar, Croatia from July 7-11, 2011.
Youth World Team members must qualify for the team each year, based on their on-the-water results at a pre-determined qualifying event or resumé. “We have a very strong team with some returning representatives,” said High Performance Director/Head Coach Kenneth Andreasen of Tampa, FL. “At the Trials, the competitors were challenged with a range in conditions. Each class winner truly put in a strong performance and are worthy of taking on the best in the world this summer at the ISAF Youth Worlds.”
