    Bahamas to Host 2019 Optimist North American Championship

    I’m writing to let you know the Nassau Yacht Club and Bahamas National Sailing School, https://www.bahsailingschool.org will host the 2019 Optimist North American Championship from September 27 to October 4, 2019.

    Over 160 junior sailor athletes between the ages 12 to 15, from more than 20 countries, are expected on Nassau’s Montagu Bay to participate in what has become the largest youth regatta in North America and the Caribbean.

    We have established a micro-site specifically for this regatta. I have enclosed the link to our press release text with photographs for inclusion in your news and events section in print editions or your linking to an on-line newsletter.


    The Bahamas will be fielding a team of 14 sailors who will qualify based on the culmination of results of three events – The KPMG Annual Youth Regatta, Bahamas Youth Olympic Regatta and the Bahamas Optimist National Championship in 2019.     Norwalk Yacht Club seeks energetic, hard-working and enthusiastic instructors for the 2019 JSALIS sailing season who can inspire our junior sailors and continue to develop their skills. NYC is currently seeking additional sailing instructors including an Optimist Racing Coach, a Feva/420 Racing Coach, and instructors to work with beginners. The program offers opportunities for racing and sailors who want to develop well-rounded seamanship skills. Instructors should be interested in working with junior sailors with all experience levels. Strong candidates will have excellent communication skills, as they will be reaching out to parents to discuss upcoming regattas and providing content for our weekly newsletter. The position is full-time with responsibilities Monday to Friday from June 17th to August 16th 2019.     Hi Joe, Maybe you can recall we met in Newport when I was working to get the Mini Transats active in the B 1-2 & importing the Zero, TipTop etc. Too bad we still do not have a North American Mini fleet & enough interest to support importing them.

    Today I am trying to donate my current Single Hander – an Aleutka 25 – I’m sure you know their history & read Ferenc Mate’s review in “Best Boats to Build & Buy”.

    My boat is in San Diego – she needs a flat deck to move her – not a boat trailer. Any backhoe/landscape gardener’s trailer can do the job.

    I would like to get Wind Check Magazine sent to my home. I live with my wife Germaine at 126 Sharon Road, Lakeville, CT 06039. We recently bought a Cutwater 302 Coupe. “302” means the boat is 30 feet long with two (2) Yamaha outboard 300 hp engines. We did training at SUNY Maritime Institute two weeks ago and it was very helpful.

    Hey there,

    I have some exciting updates for the 2018 season! We are adding a new 2 person inflatable dinghy to our lineup of dropstitch floor boats: the Carmel. I think you’ll find it’s superior durability and stability a vast improvement from the small inflatables currently on the market, and offers better value than the competition at $699. Last year, we went looking for a quality small inflatable that was built to withstand the rigor of daily use, but were underwhelmed by what we found.     I run a community sailing center, we are looking for ways for are adult students to connect to clubs and boats that need crew. I have been trying to work with your Crew connect but find that the filters do to little.

    I understand that the design side is the challenge and the expense, but could it be developed more?

    First, I like your website. It is very helpful. Btw, I single-handedly sail a 50ft sloop, offshore as well as coastal passages.

    In particular, the section on mainsheets. At the end of the section there is a photo and a brief description:

    “On this properly set up mainsheet, you can see here that the last fall of the sheet renders through a stand-alone block, thus not restraining the traveler car as in the earlier images. Another detail to contemplate is that the traveler can only slide to leeward a distance equal to the radius that is the distance between the last block on deck and the boom.”

    Now, I have a variant of this layout on my boat, and the traveler does not work worth a damn. I’d be really happy if the traveler moved equal to the radius from the last block on deck and the boom, a distance of about four feet. Instead it moves only a few inches, and then I have to crank the ‘other’ traveler control line on to a winch. It is not friction that causes the problem.

    Here is what happens with the setup in your photo. Imagine the mainsheet is pulled in tight, on the centerline, and cleated. A gust hits, and instead of releasing the mainsheet, the highly trained crew uses the traveler control. The goal is to dump air by easing the traveler to leeward. For this to happen, the boom must move with the traveler. We’ll assume the distance between traveler blocks and boom blocks remains constant to maintain leech tension—this actually requires a curved traveler with radius = distance to the mast. However, as the boom/traveler moves away from the centerline, the distance between the last block on the deck and the next block on the boom must increase. Since the line is cleated, the length cannot increase. ergo, there is very little traveler movement without releasing the mainsheet.

    If you assume no stretch, the boom and traveler 4 feet apart (vertically), the last block is on the boat’s centerline (like your photo), and at the same horizontal plane as the traveler; for the boom to move 2 feet to leeward, the mainsheet has to be released by 5.6 inches (simple Pythagorean triangle math). To move the traveler to leeward by four feet, the mainsheet has to be released 20 inches. Haul on the traveler control lines as much as you want, but you’re fighting that mainsheet all the way.

    Playing with the position of the blocks on the boom might change this slightly if the traveler is straight. The point is that unless the mainsheet is cleated at the traveler, or brought to the mast (and back to the cockpit), the traveler has varying degrees of effectiveness. In my case, the manufacturer had the last block several feet to starboard of the centerline, and the fixed end of the mainsheet attached to the coach house, several feet to port of the centerline. The expensive ball-bearing traveler is a total waste—the boom is effectively triangulated in tension!
